CHAPTER FIVE

Practical Guidelines

Spiritual authority is a function of relationship and position, not of performance. It is not a result of spiritual maturity, though the more mature we become and the more comfortable with our Christ identity, the more we will be prepared to appropriate our authority. It is not to be equated with a filling by the Holy Spirit. We know that fullness of the Holy Spirit is a daily practice that makes the Christ-life possible. We must daily refill with the Holy Spirit because we “leak.” Authority, on the other hand, does not ebb and flow like anointing by the Holy Spirit, because our spiritual authority is linked to our position in Christ. This suggests that our authority as believers is not equated with the depth or quality of our spiritual walk. Sometimes we might be in a bad place spiritually, yet we can still take a stand with great effect based on our position in Christ. However, in those times the enemy of our soul, who is called the “accuser of believers” (1 Timothy 4:13, Revelation 13), will challenge our sense of security and cause us to doubt our position or standing. Given this reality, it is important to remember that our authority will flow most fluidly when other aspects of our lives are aligned to God’s way. Thus it is wise to learn the principles behind a consistent use of authority so that we can operate without a sense of complicity or hesitation.
